Greek myth in contemporary Fiction

​ENG 2040 Great Books: Literature 
Hello, My name is Pandora, a first-year student at Wright State University. I am studying Early Childhood Education. I will discuss Greek Myths and how they are portrayed in modern times and how theses myths changed throughout history and how the theme, lessons, etc. are still relevant to this day.

Unit 1: the trojan war and mycenaean sagas

In "The Oresteia," there are three plays: "Agamemnon," "The Libation Bearers," and "The Eumenides." The first play follows the story of the murder of Agamemnon by his wife, Clytemnestra, who was killed in the second play by her son, Orestes. In the third play, Orestes way put on trial for killing his mother.

In the book "Cassandra," it tells the readers the happenings of her life in her early years as her father's favorite daughter, her teenage years as a priestess of Apollo, and the rest of her years with the gift of Apollo until her death.

In "House of Names," the story of "The Oresteia" is told from Orestes', Clytemnestra's, and Electra's point of view. Orestes time being "sent away." Clytemnestra's conspiracy to kill Agamemnon, and Electra's brewing hatred for her mother and her mother death.


unit 2: Contemporary Odysseys

"The Lost Books of the Odyssey"  by Zachary Mason is a book of 44 different interpretations of Odysseus' homecoming, and other stories that do not connect to one another.

"Circe" by Madeline Miller is a book centered around Circe and tells the stories of her birth, her childhood, her exile to Aiaia, her lovers, herlife with her son, and among other things.

The "The Penelopiad," by Margaret Atwood is about Penelope's life, her relationship with Odysseus,  her life with Odysseus, and the twelve maids. Most importantly why the twelve maids died.
